Newcomer Challenge: Task 4, XC-fliegen
Martin Scheel,
21. April 2018

Day 5 - Task 4
Michael Küffer,
20. April 2018
Finally, we had a day that looked great from the beginning to the end. A 90km-task was set: a beautiful tour to Pancas - another flying site with even more impressive rock formations - and back to the airfield of Aimorés which is just next to Baixo Guandu. Again, the day look better than it was. Thermals were usually quite weak and had to be re-centered every few turns. Also, clouds could not be trusted. So, the race was pretty tricky and along the course line, there were many pitfalls and bomb-out options. The field was distributed in many groups and the cards got reshuffled constantly. A group of about 30 pilots took the lead at the turnpoint in Pancas and managed to keep this until goal. Most Swiss pilots lost some time on the course. Michi Sigel pushed a little too hard just after the start and found himself in a position where he "could just see the last group at the horizon". He caught up well but got in goal about 20 minutes after the first group and had only few leading points. Alfredo, Yael and Emanuelle came to goal shortly afterwards, Beat a few minutes later. Jörg unfortunately bombed out on the way to the last turnpoint. Only Franz and I were in the first gaggle. I came in 30 seconds after the first but could win the task by leading points.

Day 5 - Task 3
Michael Küffer,
19. April 2018
In the morning, conditions looked worse than yesterday; more clouds and also a lot of wind. A task of 68 km was set. This time we explored new terrain after the first waypoint, the goal was in the far west from takeoff. The day developed in the opposite way than yesterday; the high clouds mainly disappeared and the wind got weaker. Already after the start the field split up in several gaggles. Climb rates were much lower than you would expect judging the clouds. So the race was pretty slow, also because most pilots did not want to take too much risk after the mass-bombout yesterday. Today, a defensive flying style was better anyway. There were three different lines / groups on the 55k-leg to goal. Michi Sigel and I were in the middle one and Michi masterfully controlled the group the whole time. About 10k before goal the right group with Alfredo merged with us with a slight advantage for them. I had an nice line on the way to the last thermal and with 2 other pilots we caught the thermal better than the Pilots behind and got in goal earlier. Michi Sigel and Alfredo followed shortly afterwards. A few minutes behind, the other groups merged and many pilots got to goal more or less together, also Yael, Beat and Franz. Jörg lost some time on the way but made goal and Emanuelle unfortunately bombed out. There are only two more days to go, but obviously the forecast looks pretty well. Photos by Yael and Michi Sigel.

Newcomer Challenge: Task 2 im Jura
Martin Scheel,
19. April 2018

Day 4 - task 2
Michael Sigel,
18. April 2018
Well, today did not work as planed. First the conditions looked very nice and good. But already on the way to the first turnpoint clouds got bigger and made a lot of shade. Michael Küffer did a great job and was leading the field to the first turnpoint and then further to the second turnpoint. However, a 100% cloud cover forced him to land. 20 minutes later the second group had to land in the same time, shortly followed by the third group. I made a mistake in the beginning and lost a lot of time. That was not as bad, as I could follow the fourth group. We got a little more sun then the others and could pass them. The climbs were still weak and I got too impatient, left the group and bombed out too. Too bad, as my group was the only one who made goal. First in goal was Stephane Poulain and Meryl got in 7. Franz Schilter is the only Swiss in goal today.

Newcomer Challange: Task 1 in Grindelwald/Interlaken
Martin Scheel,
18. April 2018

Wenig Cumuli. Basis Grindelwald 2400m steigend auf 2800m ev. höher. Basis Interlaken (Niederhorn) 2500m. Interlaken, Grindelwald mässige Talwinde. 2000m wenig Wind in unserer Region. 3000m 10-15kn Ostwind (werden wir kaum spüren)

Day 3 - canceled
Michael Sigel,
17. April 2018
After the rain yesterday, the busses had some troubles to get up to the takeoff on the muddy road. But finally everybody arrived on top and could see the rain moving in front of the takeoff. But the rain was not the only problem, as there was also quite strong wind from the SE (while the takeoff is facing N). Well, we set an easy 65km task with the wind. But even before the first briefing, it started to rain. everybody was hiding under some shelter. We were waiting, as the forecast said it should get better for the afternoon. Indeed, it cleared up later and one wind dummy could slowly climb. However, fast approaching rain forced us to cancel the day. Some pilots took of and reported nice conditions, but up to 30km/h wind. Only minutes after the first ones took of, the organization had to close the takeoff because of rain and wind.
PWC Brazil
Day 2 - canceled
Michael Sigel,
16. April 2018
We had already rain in the evening and in the night. Thats why we woke up with very low cloud base and again there was high cloud cover on top of that. On the way to the takeoff the bus stopped and together with the MD, the task committee decided to cancel the day. The main reason was that there was rain forecasted later for the day. Main problem would be to get the pilots back down from the takeoff in case of rain, as the dirt roads would get really slippery and dangerous. As soon as we headed back, the rain started. Now most Swiss pilots are looking for some alternative activities. Some do work, go to the gym or exercise in drinking beer.
PWC Brazil
Day 1 - Task 1
Michael Sigel,
15. April 2018
The weather did not look very promising when we arrived at takeoff today, as the clouds were very low and on top of that we even had high clouds. That’s why we set an easy 60km task. It had a 33km entry around P10 and then we had to take the same turnpoint with 20km. To next turnpoint was already the goal, which was at the Rio Doce on the way to Valadares. When they opened the window at 11, pilots were still struggling to climb in front of the takeoff. However, the high clouds disappeared and everybody managed to climb for the airstart at 12. At first pilots were still a little defense and not pushing much, especially because the climbs on the other side of the valley were weak. On the right side of the turnpoint we saw already overdevelopment and rain. Nick Greece was pushing a lot and found an awesome line, as the outflow of the rain pushed all the thermals on our way. We could fly fullspeed without turning. The leading group was really fast and Michael Küffer took the lead back to the City of Baixo Guandu. Here the sun was out and conditions were great. Only after we crossed the river we got low, because the nice cloud over sunny ground was not working at all. To our surprise we found an acceptable thermal in the shade… From there we did not have any problem until the ESS. BUT: many of us left the last thermal too early and sinking air and headwind forced many pilots to land after the ESS, but before the river and the goal on the other side… I arrived at the ESS with the first pilots, but had to climb to get over the river… Michael Küffer did a nice race and got third in goal. The other Swiss are a little behind.

Report T2 - Cimetta
Andrea Voumard,
15. April 2018
Vince Matteo Caprari davanti a Panzerfaust Vosti. Una giornata riuscita :)

Debriefing Regio Schiltgrat
Michael Maurer,
15. April 2018
Exit Start in Mürren- Beatenberg 2km - Wilerhorn 6.5km - Sigriswiler 3km - ESS Harder 2km - Goal Harder 400m Zylinder. Was machen?

Training Day
Michael Sigel,
15. April 2018
Welcome to the reports of the second PWC in 2018. The place was changed in last second due to some unknown (!?) problems between the organization and the city of Castelo. This is why we changed to Baixo Guandu. However, for us pilots this is even better, as the weather is usually better and the region allows more interesting task here. However, as it is a small town, the Swiss pilots are spread all over the places to get an accommodation. The following pilots are here: Michael Küffer Yael Margelisch Jörg Ewald Beat Zysset Alfredo Studer Emanuelle Zufferey Michael Sigel and exile Swiss Franz Schilter Today we had a nice training day here and it felt good to be back in the air. Smooth and nice thermals, black granit rocks, green landscape and blue sky. Like always the best Swiss pilot will write a short report on the day’s task here. Stay tuned and follow us on the live tracking.

Regiokader Jura
Markus Roschi,
14. April 2018
Wow, was für ein Tag! So viele gute Leute!

Buona serata
