Als die meisten von uns gestern morgen auf den Zug sind, hat es noch geregnet. Immerhin hat es dann auf dem Weg nach Solothurn immer mehr aufgemacht. Doch die Basis lag in Oberdorf nur ganz knapp über der Talstation und im Restaurant Weissenstein konnten wir die Sonne sogar über den Wolken geniessen – nicht gerade die Voraussetzungen für einen guten Streckenflugtag. Nach einen kurzen Briefing und Routenbesprechung (ab ins Flachland und nach Interlaken und die Romands wollten in den Westen) sind wir dann wegen dem Nordwind auf die Röti gewandert. Hier hatte es perfekten Aufwind und im Norden lag die Wolkenbasis auch knapp über Grathöhe. Im Süden hingen die Wolken noch immer mehrere hundert Meter unter dem Startplatz. Dass es sehr viel Feuchtigkeit hatte, war nach dem vielen Regen in den letzten Tagen zu erwarten. Womit wir nicht gerechnet hatten, dass auch noch Altocumulus (wohl eher Altostratus) uns die Sonne verdeckte. Parawaiting war angesagt für die gut 30 Pilot*innen von der XC Liga.
Um 12:30 wagte sich Local Tim von Burg als erster raus und konnte sich halten. Obwohl der Himmel noch immer fast komplett abgeschattet war, starteten nun immer mehr Piloten. Die Thermik war mehr als schwach, doch der Nordwind drückte die spärliche Thermik aus dem Balsthalertal and die Jurakette. Ab 13:30 kam dann auch langsam die Sonne zum Vorschein.
Zusammen mit Tim bin ich bei der Schwängimatt ins Flachland raus. Normalerweise ist der Übergang vom Jura ins Flachland schwierig – nicht so heute! Obwohl es noch immer viel Schatten hatte, konnten wir 5km Vollgas unter einer Wolke östlich von Langental fliegen. Ab 14:30 waren die mittelhohen Wolken endlich weg. Komischerweise hatte ich den Eindruck, dass ab diesem Zeitpunkt die Thermik auch weniger zuverlässig war – jedenfalls hatten wir einige Low Saves.. Richtung Napf/Entlebuch/Hohgant hatte es noch zu viele Wolken, weshalb wir uns für eine Route nordwestlich davon entschieden haben. Spätestens ab Oberlangenegg vor dem Thunersee standen die Wolken wieder perfekt und es konnte wieder stark beschleunigt geflogen werden! Leider zog dann der Därliggrat nicht mehr (keinen Talwind), weshalb wir nicht mehr weiterfliegen konnten und auf der Höhenmatte in Interlaken gelandet sind.
Fazit: Letztendlich hat sich der Tag wirklich gut entwickelt und es war spannend zu Fliegen, ein richtig gutes Training für weitere Streckenflüge. Vielen Dank an alle Pilot*innen fürs erscheinen.

When most of us got on the train yesterday morning, it was still raining. At least it then opened up more and more on the way to Solothurn. But the base was in Oberdorf just above the valley station and in the restaurant Weissenstein we could enjoy the sun even above the clouds - not exactly the conditions for a good cross-country flight day. After a short briefing and route discussion (off to the lowlands and to Interlaken and the Romands wanted to go to the west) we hiked to the Röti because of the north wind. Here it had perfect upwind and in the north the cloud base was also just above ridge height. In the south the clouds still hung several hundred meters below the launch site. That there was a lot of humidity was to be expected after all the rain in the last days. What we didn't expect was that altocumulus (more likely altostratus) also covered the sun. Parawaiting was the order of the day for the 30 pilots of the XC League.
At 12:30 local Tim von Burg was the first to venture out and could hold his ground. Although the sky was still almost completely shaded, more and more pilots took off. The thermals were more than weak, but the north wind pushed the sparse thermals from the Balsthal valley to the Jura chain. From 13:30 the sun slowly appeared.
Together with Tim I went out at Schwängimatt into the flatland. Normally the transition from the Jura to the flatland is difficult - not so today! Although there was still a lot of shadow, we could fly 5km full throttle under a cloud east of Langental. From 14:30 the medium-high clouds were finally gone. Funnily enough, I had the impression that from this point on the thermals were also less reliable - at least we had some low saves.... Towards Napf/Entlebuch/Hohgant there were still too many clouds, so we decided to take a route northwest of there. At the latest from Oberlangenegg before Lake Thun the clouds were perfect again and it was possible to fly strongly accelerated again! Unfortunately then the Därliggrat did not pull any more (no valley wind), why we could not fly further and landed on the Höhenmatte in Interlaken.
Conclusion: In the end the day turned out really well and it was exciting to fly, a really good training for further cross country flights. Many thanks to all pilots for coming.
