Am Sonntag haben wir das erste XC Ligafliegen der Saison gehabt in Frutigen. Wegen Covid-19 haben wir die Teilnehmer auf 20 beschränkt. Auch wenn sich die Toptherm-Prognose verschlechtert hat, fanden sich doch einige Piloten am Flugfeld ein. In der Tat war es noch sehr feucht und um 8 Uhr lag die Basis noch fast auf dem Talboden. Doch die Sonneneinstrahlung war gut und die Basis stieg schnell. Der Transport klappte reibungslos und so standen wir um 9:30 am Startplatz. Hier gab es ein Briefing zum Tag, sowie Routenvorschläge. Die Basis war mittlerweile schon auf Startplatzhöhe, doch die Piloten trauten den Bedingungen noch nicht so ganz, zu unrecht: als erster gestartet konnte ich in kürzester Zeit zum Niesen und zurück fliegen (Hinweis: je früher man startet, umso weiter fliegt man). Spätestens um 11 Uhr waren alle Piloten in der Luft und flogen entweder zum Niesen, oder bereits Richtung Adelboden. Wenn man einmal an der Basis war, konnte ohne zu Drehen bis nach Adelboden geflogen werden. Hier galt es, etwas Höhe zu machen und die Lenk zu queren. Wie besprochen hat das Flöschhore von weit unten gut funktioniert. Weiter ging es Richtung Gstaad und Pic Chaussy. Spätestens ab hier war der Nordwind doch spürbar, jede Thermik war bockig und windversetzt. Insbesondere die E-W-Ketten waren überspült (z.B. bei les Diablerets oder bei Rougement). Zum Glück war die Thermik relativ stark und so sind doch viele weit nach Westen gekommen. Einige haben bereits früher gedreht und sind via Niesen an den Sigriswiler Grat. Insbesondere die frühen Piloten berichteten von ziemlich starken Turbulenzen wegen dem Nordwind. Wie besprochen funktioniert der Grat später besser (Talwind, mehr Sonneneinstrahlung), turbulent war er aber wohl immer.
Die Abschattungen waren ab 14 Uhr auch ein Thema und so war es taktisch ein ziemlich anspruchsvoller Tag. Es wurden unterschiedliche Strecken ab Mäggisseren geflogen, hier ein paar Highlights:
- Christoph Dunkel – 124km flaches Dreieck
- Manuela Prunder – 154km bis nach Luzern
- Bernhard Naegeli – 94km FAI-Dreieck
- Mihai Martalogu – 85km FAI-Dreieck
- Martina Hauri – 135km bis nach Zug

On Sunday we had the first XC league flying of the season in Frutigen. Because of Covid-19 we limited the participants to 20. But the sunshine was good and the base rose quickly. The transport went smoothly and so we were at the starting point at 9:30 am. Here we had a briefing for the day and route suggestions. Meanwhile the base was already at take-off altitude, but the pilots didn't quite trust the conditions yet, wrongly so: as the first one to take off I was able to sneeze and fly back in no time (note: the earlier you take off, the further you fly). At 11 am at the latest, all pilots were in the air and were either flying to sneeze or already flying towards Adelboden. Once at the base, you could fly to Adelboden without turning. Here you had to gain some altitude and cross the Lenk. As discussed, the Flöschhore worked well from far below. The flight continued towards Gstaad and Pic Chaussy. At the latest from here on the north wind was noticeable, every thermal was choppy and wind shifted. Especially the E-W chains were flooded (e.g. at les Diablerets or at Rougement). Luckily the thermals were relatively strong and so many of them went far to the west. Some have already turned earlier and went via Niesen to the Sigriswiler ridge. Especially the early pilots reported quite strong turbulence due to the north wind. As discussed, the ridge works better later (valley wind, more sunshine), but was probably always turbulent.
