METEO
There is a slight northerly overpressure on the ground (2hp), but a slight southerly overpressure at altitude (the Alps), which leads to southerly winds near the Alpine ridge and south wind above 2000 m. Pressure: Approx. 1018
A slightly less unstable layer up to 1000 m will hardly slow down the development of thermals in our area, but probably high clouds slow it down. We can expect the development of moderate thermals from midday, later 1-3/8 with base at 3300, above high relief 3800 and higher. From mid-afternoon, spreading Cu with shadows possibly followed by rain showers in the vicinity (our flight area should remain dry til late afternoon).
Thermal quality: Unfortunately, there is a bit of warm air advection, which worsens the thermals. If additionally high clouds are shading a litte bit, it could be, that the flight is slow.
Normal valley winds
1500 m 5-10 N
2000 m Verbier 5-10 S, in the Wallis-valleys from north, 5-10 kmh
2500 m Verbier 10-15 kmh S, towards higher relief 20-25 kmh
3000 m Verbier 20 kmh S, towards higher relief 30 kmh, further east less
3500 m Verbier 25 kmh S, towards higher relief 35 kmh, further east less
4000 m 30-40 kmh S
The wind-direction turns from NW/W on the ground over north at about 1500m, to northeast at 2000m, to east, southeast to south at 2500m. The hight of this change of wind direction varies depending on the location.
Summary:
Up to 2000 m we'll have a northerly breeze, above that we'll have southerly winds, the higher the stronger, too strong in the Valais valleys. In addition, we'll probably see even bigger cu forming in the afternoon, but I'm expecting rather no showers.
We'll have to rely heavily on the locals for the task setting.
